Position Duty Statement

Position Summary

The Bike Shop Assistant Manager is responsible for assisting in the overall operation of Community Bike Shop 916 (CBS) which is a project of the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates (SABA). CBS receives donated bikes and refurbishes them to sell affordable rides. CBS offers professional bike (both standard and e-bike) repair, tune-ups, and maintenance. This position involves leading and working with a team of staff bike mechanics and volunteers, ensuring high-quality bicycle mechanic work, point-of-sale support and oversight, and customer service. The ideal candidate is an experienced bicycle mechanic with customer service experience, a passion for cycling, and an understanding of bike mechanics and retail operations.

This position reports to the CBS Bike Shop Manager. Duties may change based on organizational needs. This is a non-exempt hourly hybrid position with required in-shop (80%), SABA HQ (10%) and remote (10%) work capabilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Shift Leadership (10%)

  • Serve as a shift leader at CBS and support bicycle mechanics and volunteers on duty when the Bike Shop Manager is not available. 
  • Support the Bike Shop Manager with scheduling shifts, managing workflow, and taking on or delegating tasks to ensure efficient service delivery.
  • Provide training and support professional development for the service team.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Coordinate and support volunteer participation in shop operations while promoting a safe and positive volunteer experience.

Bike Service Operations & Quality Control (40%)

  • Assess and conduct repairs on donated bicycles (both analog and e-bicycles) and bikes brought in by customers for diagnoses, repairs, or maintenance.
  • Perform quality control checks on completed work orders.
  • Manage and maintain the service queue, ensuring clear communication with customers about turnaround times.
  • Ensure repair documentation, work orders, and service records are complete, accurate, and maintained in accordance with organizational procedures.

Workplace Safety (10%)

  • Maintain compliance with all applicable workplace safety requirements, including Cal/OSHA regulations, safe tool operation procedures, battery handling protocols, hazard reporting, and accident prevention practices. 
  • Follow established procedures for the inspection, storage, charging, transportation, and disposal of lithium-ion batteries and e-bike electrical systems.

Customer Service: (20%)

  • Serve as a point of contact for customer service issues and technical questions.
  • Educate customers on repair options, pricing, and bike maintenance.
  • Handle customer complaints professionally and with a problem-solving approach.
  • Ensure a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all customers visiting the service area.
  • Be able to recommend appropriate bikes on-hand for riders of all backgrounds.

Inventory & Financial Management (10%)

  • Work with the Bike Shop Manager on ordering and managing parts and tools inventories.
  • Process and manage work orders, invoices, and payment transactions accurately.
  • Follow established cash-handling, inventory control, purchasing, and financial accountability procedures. 
  • Conduct routine inventory counts and assist with inventory reconciliation and loss prevention efforts.

Shop Maintenance & Organization (5%)

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized service area.
  • Ensure all tools and equipment are in good working order and regularly maintained.
  • Stay up to date on new bicycle technologies, industry trends, and repair techniques.

Other Duties (2.5%)

Perform other related duties as assigned consistent with the scope of the position.

Community Engagement (2.5%)

Support community outreach, educational programs, bicycle advocacy events, and organizational initiatives as requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a professional bicycle mechanic, with expertise in a wide range of bicycle types (road, mountain, e-bikes, etc.). Strong knowledge of bicycle components, repair techniques, and industry standards.
  • Frequently lift, carry, push, pull, and move bicycles, equipment, and inventory weighing up to 75 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation. 
  • This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, grasping, and repetitive hand movements associated with bicycle repair and retail operations. 
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Proficiency with Point of Sale (POS) and inventory management software (e.g., Lightspeed).
  • A passion for cycling and an enthusiasm for sharing that passion with others.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to engage effectively with colleagues and community members from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with used bicycle shop retail operations. 
  • Bilingual skills.
  • Experience in posting to social media channels.

Working Conditions

  • Evening and weekend work required. 
  • Combination of office, shop, and remote work. 
  • Extended periods standing, walking, biking, lifting, and shop setup.

Pay and Benefits

  • This is a part time non-exempt hourly position with a rate of $25-$30 per hour, dependent upon experience.
